Create an LMS Connection for Blackboard

Set up of Slice as a tool provider in Blackboard is accessible only to BEST Network members with the Institution Admin and Subscription Owner roles.

  1. Log into account.best.edu.au
  2. Navigate to the Connect LMS tab
  3. If a connection has already been set up it will appear in the list. If you need to create a new Connection click the Add new connection button.
  4. Select your LMS from the List provided
  5. Provide a name for the connection
  6. Click Generate new key
 
 

Add a new LTI tool provider

You may need support from your Learning Management team to add the connection as a site wide pre-configured tool provider. The following steps may differ slightly depending on your instance of Blackboard.

You can add new tool providers using Register Provider Domain.

  1. On the System Administrator Panel, select LTI Tool Providers.
  2. Select Register LTI 1.1 Provider.
  3. Type the Provider Domain: slice-lti.best.edu.au
  4. Set the Provider Domain Status as Approved.
  5. Set up the configuration for your entire site by selecting Set Globally. This will mean that individual users do not need to add the key and secret each time.
  6. Add the Tool Provider Key and Tool Provider Secret as provided in the Connect LMS area of best.edu.au
  7. For Institution Policies under "Send User Data" select Send user data only over SSL
  8. For "User Fields to Send" check the boxes for Role in Course, Name and Email address
  9. For Allow Membership Service Access select No
  10. For Show User Acknowledgment Message select No
  11. Select Submit

Note that the Institution Policies section pulls preferences from the Global Properties. You can manage settings for the individual provider here during set up.

 

Managing Placements

After you have added a new LTI provider in the System Administrator Panel, it appears on the LTI providers list. You can manage the placement of the tool so that users adding the LTI tool to their courses do not have to know the tool URL or secret key

  1. Hover over the Tool Provider you set up above and click the drop down arrow that appears
  2. Select Manage Placements
  3. Chose Create Placement
  4. In the Label box, provide a name for the placement that will appear in the Course. Choose something that will be self-explanatory to your staff (e.g. "Slice", "Slice Image Bank", or "BEST Network Slice")
  5. Choose a Handle to uniquely identify the placement, e.g. "Slice"
  6. For Availability select Yes to make the placement available to subject builders and instructors.
  7. For Type, choose Deep Linking content tool and check the box to Allow student access
  8. Consider checking the Launch in a New Window option.
  9. Under Tool Provider Information, for the Tool Provider URL enter: https://slice-lti.best.edu.au/lti-setup.
  10. Add the Tool Provider Key and Tool Provider Secret as provided in the Connect LMS area of best.edu.au and as added when registering the Tool Provider in the System Administrator Panel
  11. Select Submit
