Adding a link to Slice as a Moodle external tool

  1. After logging into your LMS click "Turn editing on"

  2. Click "+ Add an activity or resource"

  3. Select External tool
  4. Select the tool using the name given to the tool by your administrator
  5. Click the "Select content" button

  6. Add a link from Slice (image, annotation layer or Collection) into the URL box. Examples are provided. Confirm that the text to display is appropriate and click Save.

  7. Under the "Show more" option in the General tab, select an option for Launch Container. More information is provided below.

  8. Select "Save and display" or "Save and return to Course". Your item should be visible.

Launch Container

Note that the "Show more..." button in the General tab when adding a Slice link as an external tool has several options for the Launch Container. Your admin set a default option for the launch container but this can be changed for each External Tool link.

Options include:

    • Default: uses the default option selected by the site administrator
    • Embed: places the item within your Moodle page and includes any header and side bar navigation.
    • Embed, without blocks: places the item within your Moodle page and includes the header but not side bar navigation.
    • New Window: opens the link in a new tab allowing maximum screen real estate for Slice and allow the users to change tabs when they want to return to Moodle.
    • Existing Window: load the Slice link in the current window when clicked. The user will be required to click back if they want to return to Moodle.

 

Using the tool

If it is your first time using the Slice external tool you should see two buttons:

  1. Login to BEST Network
  2. Create new BEST Network account

For all subsequent uses of the Slice external tool you will be automatically shown the content.

Login to BEST Network

If you already have a BEST Network account click Login to BEST Network. Enter your email address and password in the boxes provided and click Save. If successful you should proceed to view the content. An error message will be shown if your username or password is incorrect.

 

Create new BEST Network account

If you have not set up a BEST Network account or you have forgotten your password, use Create new BEST Network account.

  1. Enter your email in the box provided. A verification code will be sent to your email.
  2. Enter the verification code in the box provided
  3. Set a password ensuring it has at least eight characters including an uppercase character, lowercase character and a number.
  4. Check the box to indicate you have read the terms and conditions and click Sign Up.
  5. You will proceed to view the content.
